ACHIVEMENTS AND OUTPUTS
(2018- 2023)

1. Main achievements and research impacts

1. Main achivements

1.1. SUMMARY OF THE MAIN OUTPUTS

1/9

The main objective of the CV-Agrobiodiversity project was to contribute to the knowledge, sustainable use and conservation of Cabo Verde's biodiversity. As detailed below (section 2 - outputs), we are pleased to report that the project exceeded all our best expectations and the milestones initially proposed, as a very high number of publications were achieved, namely 4 books, 4 book chapters and 32 papers published in renown international journals. Also, 75 lectures, many of them by invitation, and 15 posters were presented at international and national congresses.

1.2. MAIN ACHIEVEMENTS, MILESTONES               AND RESEARCH IMPACTS

1/17

The CV-Agrobiodiversity project aimed to provide unique knowledge on the plant genetic resources of the archipelago of Cabo Verde. Among the main results obtained under this project, it was revealed that Cabo Verde has a great diversity of Crop Wild Relatives (CWR), including many species adapted to adverse agroecological conditions and poor soils. It is highlighted the publication of a unique book edited by the team members:

• “Duarte, M.C., Gomes, I., Romeiras M.M. (eds.) (2023). Recursos Genéticos Vegetais das ilhas de Cabo Verde. ISA Press, Lisboa, Portugal. 460 pp. ISBN: 978-972-8669-99-7”, on the plant genetic resources of Cabo Verde, provides, for the first-time, information about ca. 300 useful plants used for food and forage (including those occurring spontaneously or sub-spontaneously and those that are cultivated).

Phylogenetic data – Sequences to be included in GenBank

Phylogeny: A total of 122 plant samples corresponding to 12 different species were collected for sequencing. The sequencing results are being analyzed for the writing of articles that will contribute to the understanding of the phylogenetic relationships between the different native species of Brassicaceae of Macaronesia.

6.2. CAPACITY BUILDING AND TRAINING OF STUDENTS IN CABO VERDE ISLANDS

To increase the training of the Cabo Verde students in strategic areas, which is a key factor to fully achieve the goals of this project, several training courses were performed, namely by learning several laboratory techniques in the field of Molecular Biology (in ISA, UAz and FCUL facilities); techniques for extraction and isolation of natural products (ISA and FCT/UNL); Georeferencing and digitizing plant collections (Training GBIF courses/ISA); and Ecological Modelling (UAz).

Also, the PI in Cabo Verde - Isildo Gomes, promoted several field activities with students from the University of Cabo Verde, and members of Non-Governmental Organizations, promoting the inventory of native flora and vegetation on the islands of Santiago, Fogo, Santo Antão, São Vicente, Santa Luzia, São Nicolau and Brava from 2020 to 2023; and b) coordination of fieldwork in the inventory of native flora and vegetation on the island of Santiago, including the collection of more than 2000 samples of plant material for DNA study of populations of endangered vascular flora - from 2021 to 2023 (Within the framework of the NEXTGENDEM Project).
